For our next theme, starting September 2026, we are going to be taking our inspiration from the Harold and the Purple Crayon books by Crockett Johnson. This is a great project for children to develop their writing skills and understanding of how stories are put together as well as being a wonderful starting point for creativity and imagination.
Throughout the project we will be exploring the original stories, writing our own stories and creating an original piece of theatre to be shared with family and friends. As the project develops we will be making our own props, set and costumes in response to the ideas that emerge. We will also be putting together a a book with all of the childrens stories that can be shared as a printed copy or as a digitial book – see examples from a previous project below.
Harold and the Purple Crayon Books
Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, Harold draws himself a landscape full of beauty and excitement. He conducts his adventure with the utmost care, letting his imagination run free, but keeping his wits about him all the while. This magical journey gives us the wondrous sense that anything is possible.
There are 7 Harold and the Purple Crayon books – see above- in case you would like to have a look before we get started. More recently it was adapted and made into a film, although for a slightly older audience. I have included a link to the trailor below in case you are interested.
